The Ballad of Gene Odom
Well, my name is Gene Odom I’m a southern born man solid as the day is long
And I can feel your eyes upon me
But I’m still carrying on
I got caught in the middle of a hurricane
But I’m still standing tall
And I’ll stand my ground straight to hell and back
And I’ll never back down
“Me and Ronnie grew up together.
We spent a lot of our time as little boys over there on the west side of Jacksonville.”
Yes, and I’m still here and I’m dying inside
I don’t understand the plan
I’ve had some good women but I’ve lost them all
I’m alone but here I stand
If I look behind me, I look in the sky
I feel the rain come down
I scream out because I feel so cold
But I don’t make a sound, I don’t make a sound,
Not even a sound
Thirty some years have passed
And I still feel the same
People still singing those songs
Everybody still saying the name
Just some barefoot boys that grew up together
On the poorest side of town
And I was still there just like before when the free bird hit the ground
“I put Ronnie in his seat and strapped him in and put a pillow in his lap. He had been asleep.
I told him we’re fixin’ to crash and that’s the last words I ever spoke to him…”
Yes and I’m still here and I’m dying inside
I don’t understand the plan
I’ve had some good women but I’ve lost them all
I’m alone but here I stand
If I look behind me, I look in the sky
I feel the rain come down
I scream out because I feel so cold
But I don’t make a sound, I don’t make a sound
Not even a sound
Well, his name is Gene Odom and he’s a southern born man
solid as the day is long
And he can feel your eyes upon him
But he’ll still carry on
He got caught in the middle of a hurricane
But he’s still standing tall
And he’ll stand that ground straight to hell and back
And he’ll never back down…
I wish I had a friend like that
